Re-visiting the online/offline/professional/private divide in virtual workplaces

In the new reality we found ourselves recently, home-working redefined what counts online and offline, private or professional. With the increase of ‘virtualness’ in our working day, we rely increasingly on a range of digitally mediated communication platforms. In this workshop I invite the audience to reflect on how changed ways of working affect efficiency, work-like balance and communication practices. During the session we will explore how we, as scholars can lead the way to explore, and perhaps even influence the developing conventions of online professional interactions. I will report on my own research in which I explore the complex ways members of a virtual team orient to digitally mediated communication platforms, and how these orientations are both reflected in and are constituted through their communication practices. Viewed through a tri-dimensional lens of ‘tool’, ’place’ and ‘way of being’ I will demonstrate how the orientation to the communication platform enables team members to negotiate their ways of working, their individual and group identities, and ultimately, to create a shared sense of meaning about their work. Drawing on the lessons learned from the discussed examples, we will reflect on how ways of working during the pandemic may lead to a change in attitude towards the professional and private divide, both in terms of identities and physical contexts.
